FAQs

Why do I need a portrait or headshot?

A professional portrait or headshot helps you look more professional. When a photographer takes your portrait it is lit and composed well, while they will direct you to get the most flattering and natural expression. This is increasingly necessary for digital media including social media channels like LinkedIn, where colleagues, partners, clients and recruiters are looking at profiles.

When should I get a new portrait made?

You should get a new professional portrait made when you have a big career change, like a promotion, or when you are returning to work after a hiatus like maternity leave. Think about updating it every few years so your colleagues and clients recognise you. This helps build trust and integrity as well as building your own confidence.

Can I use a selfie as a professional headshot?

It is not advised to do so. Using a selfie taken on your phone is obvious and will not be lit or composed to a high standard. The resolution will also be low quality. This will not look very professional.

Can I decide how I look in my portrait?

Yes, of course. Your portrait is how you want others to see you. This does not mean you have to change your personality. I enjoy discussing options with clients, and this can include deciding on an internal or external location, what colours to use and what poses to go with. If it feels uncomfortable we won’t do it. As a neurodiverse-friendly photographer I make sure we collaborate on getting the best version of you.

Who needs a portrait or headshot?

Many professionals use portraits and headshots for their corporate biography, resume, public profile or social media. Artists use portraits for their biography and gallery profile and will often choose to be shown in their studio, while authors and agents often use their headshot for press events and networking. You can choose to have a portrait made just to feel good though.
